Concentration: My practice is almost exclusively devoted to criminal defense. I practice at both the trial-court and appellate-court levels, and in federal as well as state, local, and tribal courts. I am experienced with cases of all types, from shoplifting to criminal traffic to more serious matters involving, for example, sexual misconduct, narcotics, homicide or other interpersonal violence, and even white-collar crimes. I continue to be available for the defense of cases of all types.
In addition to criminal defense work, I take on a limited number of civil cases in areas related to my criminal work. These have included non-criminal traffic infractions (which I defend on a regular basis), civil asset forfeiture proceedings, juvenile-court matters, and criminal justice-related civil rights claims (for example, misconduct of police or corrections officers).
Qualifications: My academic credentials are set forth above, and my experience is also mentioned. I began doing criminal defense work in 1982, as a law-school student intern, working for a local public defense office in Seattle. I remained in public defense work until 1996. Since then, I have been mostly in private practice, sometimes taking court-appointed work, and continuing to emphasize criminal defense. Aside from my court practice, I have been active with -- and occasionally honored by -- several bar organizations. I have also been a speaker at, or organizer of, continuing legal education seminars for other members of the bar.
Flat Fees / Pricing Info.: My fees are determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature, seriousness and complexity of the legal and factual issues presented. Like most lawyers who emphasize criminal defense work, I generally require a flat-rate fee, payable in advance, and non-refundable.
