Subject: Bad Online Billing Practices Bank of America
Comment:
I recently had a HUGE issue with Bank of America's bill pay system. I am currently in a Chap 13 bankruptcy and I was behind on my car payment. I requested a loan from my 401K program at work and the monies were deposited to my checking account. Once the monies were deposited I began scheduling payment for all my household bills. I decided to try Bank of America's billpay system to process a credit card payment and for my car payments to Capital One. At this point I am trying to catch up 7 car payments before the bank takes my vehicle out from under me. I went to the billpay website and scheduled 3 car payments on 10/16/09 which were scheduled to go out on 10/19/09. A couple hours later my husband came home and he said that I should have paid 4 car payments instead, so I went back online to the billpay website and cancelled the first payment. I clicked on the scheduled payments and the payment showed cancelled. Then I went in and scheduled the payment for the correct amount to cover the 4 payments. Well guess what! The bank deducted both payments anyway and I ended up with 15 transactions (Debit card and checks) that that bank went ahead and paid, but my account ended up in a negative -600.00 balance. The weekend of the 17th and 18th was my 6th year wedding anniversary! What an anniversary gift!!!...a negative checking account balance!! Monday night on October 19th I was in Wal-Mart trying to purchase groceries when I found out about the issue because Wal-Mart declined my debit card. There happened to be a Bank of America ATM in Wal-Mart so I went over to find out what was going on. I was so distraught and embarrassed! I had to take money out of my savings account to pay for my groceries...then I was so upset that I left my debit card in the ATM!! Then a few days later my account was negative -900.00 because of overdraft fees and a few other transactions the bank allowed to go through. And my rent check still hadn't cleared. I don't think my husband and I slept for a week while all this was going on. Every moment I got I called the bank or was standing in their local office. I told them that I was not going away and they better fix the issue. A girl named Mary in the online billpay customer service told me that their IT department could give me keystroke by keystroke research and they would know every click and keystoke I made. I have yet to receive the information. Then I was told that they could only give me timestamp research. I am still battling with them over this. They keep saying that it is not a banking error. Anyway, I finally got a manager involved and she authrized to credit my account for the overdraft fees, but still said this was not a banking error and that she was crediting me as a courtesy. Then I had to fight with Capital One to refund me for the payment that was in error. Finally on Monday night the 25th of October my account was back in order. Bank of America still will not fess up to their error. I will never use their billpay services again!!
