Subject: Unauthorized fees
Comment:
I was a DirecTV customer for 8 years. In 2008 I decided to try AT&T Uverse. I had the AT&T system installed and the DirecTV system disabled. I then called DirecTV to cancel my service and I was informed that I was under a contract and owed more than $300 in fees because I was breaking the contract. I was told that when my DirectTV HD DVR hard drive had broken and they had to send me a replacement unit, a new contract was started. I had never heard of this new commitment and refused to pay the fee. I have been told that there was a small piece of paper in the box in which the unit had been shipped that outlined the new commitment. I never saw any such piece of paper and I was never told about the new agreement by any DirecTV representative. If someone could show me my signature proving my agreement to a new contract, I would pay the fee. Because I had given them my credit card information for automatic monthly payments, I was forced to dispute the charge when it appeared on my monthly statement and then I cancelled the credit card. I am now being contacted regularly by a collection agency for the money, but refuse to pay this unauthorized charge.
