Charter Communications is likely the worst cable company I've had to deal with over the past 25 years. Their system is down or has problems almost daily and, in fact, the internet is out at least once every day of the week. I have a file server that displays system errors every morning at 6:00 am and there are at least a dozen or so errors everyday as a result of the internet being down. This is easy to quantify because my system maintains these error logs indefinitely.
As for their cable television service, about half of the channels are actually working as of this moment 11/15/08 at 7:57 pm. This is fairly regular and is the same problem we had yesterday morning, though at some point during the day it was corrected but, again, this is more common then not and nearly everyday of the week.
Charter invests heavily in advertising trying to attract new customers, money that would be better spent actually spent fixing their problems or hiring people who can identify and/or solve the problems.
Most people I've mentioned this to over the years have had the same experience as well, though we will be getting another option to go with AT&T shortly. I realize that won't increase the relaibility substantially but I would think if you could take all the time their system is down and refund that percentage back to their customers it would likely force them to make the necessary changes...class action suit anyone?
25 years ago when cable first became mainstream there were fewer problems with similar quality so either they're working with the same equipment that existed 25 years ago or the quality of the people they hire has decreased dramatically. Either way, if you have any other choice then Charter it's unlikely you could do worse.
