I have had the same experience with Hollywood Video some years ago. I returned a movie via the drop off slot, and then was told it was never returned. Of course, there was no way to prove I had returned it, but I refused to pay for the movie and wrote several letters of protest. Eventually they decided not to charge me, but I cancelled my membership with them in person at the store. While canceling I was explaining to one of the junior employees what had happened and why I was canceling. He said that it was not unheard of for popular new movies to "disappear" from the drop slot - that most likely someone at Hollywood Video had palmed the DVD. I have always thought that the system for returning movies is flawed. You are required to sign out when you get the movies, so the company has a receipt, but when you return a movie, no receipt is issued. I believe that video companies should have a system of return that will give you a receipt just like an ATM. You could put the disc into the machine, and then put the cover in after it, with a photo image of both on your time dated receipt. But there's no motivation for rental companies to do this as they can get away with charging late fees and non-returned rental charges because the user has no recourse to prove that a DVD was returned, or when it was returned.
I now have a policy of returning all videos in person, and asking the person at the desk to confirm there are no late fees, and to process the return in front of me. I still haven't been able to get a receipt, but at least I know the return was entered into the system.
