Subject: Appliance Warranties
Comment:
I purchased a refrigerator in 2005 from Home Depot and have a service contract with them which expires in 11/08. My refrigerator went out a week ago and I can get no one too service this appliance. Going through GE who holds the warranty said that they would need 24-48 hours to find a dealer that would except the warranty. I live in the Washington,D.C Metropolitan area. I find it hard to believe that there is no dealer that would not except the work. But to my dismay and many phone calls approximately 20 in one day that no dealer in the area will come out if your applicance is under warranty. You have to pay up front and hope you will get your money back. This also is for extended warranties. My feeling on this is that this is a fraudalent practice upon the store in which you purchased the item to misrepresent this transaction. They take your money but cannot give you the protection in which you have already paid for. I had to have my refrigerator fixed at my expense (even though my warranty is still in affect). BUYER BEWARE !!!!Do not buy any service agreements unless you know that the store you are dealing with will also service your equipment. I'm assuming that the private dealers that fix appliances, etc. have been burned so many times by these service contracts that they will have no part in fixing things under any warranty agreement. (I was told this buy several dealers). If I could and still may will try to bring suit against the store and GE for misrepresenting these contracts to the consumer. I will also write to the Better Business Bureau about this. I would like to hear back if anyone has dealt with this problem before. Thank you.
