Here is a recent collection horror story from AtlanticCity.com: "My mother, who is 87 years old and living on Social Security, recently received a phone call from a collection agency. The agency demanded she pay $216.88 on a closed credit card account * * *. I spoke to a supervisor at the collection agency, who said the original balance was probably only about $1.02. He speculated that the credit card company added $60 in late fees, and then sold the debt with an account balance of $61.02. The agency then added fees of its own to bring the total demanded up to $216.88."
