I agree that a class action suit needs to be filed against U-haul. My problem took place at the office on 1224 N. Tryon Street in Charlotte, NC. I had a storage unit at the above location. I sent in my payment of $110.00 in early November of 2007. This payment was sent out to me on November 6th,(from Charlotte NC to Syracuse NY), by the manager Kandice Shedd. With the returned money order was a letter stating that this payment was an underpayment and that I needed to pay $184.14. I obtained a money order for $74.14, put it with the money order for $110.00, for a total of $184.14, and sent them back to U-haul. I made sure that I put it to the attention of Kandice Shedd. On November 21st she sent out both money orders to me stating that I needed to pay $247.09, that she needed two phone numbers to reach me, ( because I had moved), and that I needed to start paying by automatic pay. I sent a letter to her stating to start the auto pay on 12/18/07 and not prior because the card wouldn't be activated until then. I told Kandice Shedd, whom I directed all mail to, exactly when I would pay, and gave two phone numbers where I could be reached. I had already paid the amount that she requested in the first letter, but I returned the previous two money orders with a third for $63.00, totalling $247.14. I made sure to pay before storage would be due again. On 12/19/07 I called U-haul to inform them that my card wasn't activated yet. The worker, Rose or Rosa informed me that she couldn't find my name in the computer. She asked her manager, Kandice Shedd, why she couldn't find my name. Kandice pretended to look and said, "Oh, your things were auctioned on 11/28/07." I asked the worker to put Kandice on the phone. Kandice Shedd got on the phone. I asked her how my belongings could have been auctioned off when I had paid for them and how could they have been auctioned on 11/28/07 when she sent a letter to me on 11/21/07, stating that I needed to pay this new amount. It didn't give a date or mention anything about an upcoming auction,(in just a few days). Had she told me that I needed to pay by the 28th or my belongings would be auctioned then I would have paid by the 28th, even if I would have had to borrow it. I asked Kandice why I wasn't informed of the auction by phone or mail. She exclaimed to me that they don't call people and that they did not have my new address. Why then did she request the 2 phone numbers from me,(if they don't call people), and how is it that she managed to continuously send the money orders back to me? She contradicted herself stating that I called and had given them the new address, which is a lie. Either way though, she had the address,so why wasn't I informed about the auction? I asked her, if they sold my belongings, then where were my money orders. She informed me that I had not paid the full amount so they were sent back to me. I told her that I didn't receive them back and that I HAD paid the full amount from both letters. She thought this was one big joke, (she continuously placed me on hold for extreme amounts of time). She said that U-haul didn't cash them and I could check by contacting the place where I purchased the money orders. She also told me that she didn't have time to explain to me and that I could contact customer service. I did contact customer service and I did pay to find out what happened to my money orders. Come to find out, not only were my money orders cashed by U-haul, but they were applied to another storage account for someone with the same last name! I contacted the BBB and I filed a complaint, everything is still in the works. I had to pay for proof that U-haul did indeed cash the money orders for a total of $22.00. I was contacted today,(2/5/08), by Kandice Shedd informing me that they received my proof and that they were going to refund me a partial refund. The rest would go towards fees from the storage. She is completely delusional!! Not only do I want a refund for the FULL amount that I paid, I want the cost of proving that the money orders were cashed by U-haul, and I want to be completely reimbursed for my belongings. Yes, they did contact their insurance company, but I have to wait for this drawn out process of an investigation!! This should be an immediate resolution! Their insurance agent had claimed to me that if I hadn't paid the full amount then they might be okay to sell my things. I exclaimed to him that I did pay the full amount! So he is currently investigating on their end because she claims to have sent me a letter informing me of an auction. I still have the two letters in which Kandice Shedd sent to me. I am going to fax them to him so he can see that not only did she not inform me of an auction, but she didn't put a date as to when the payment needed to be paid by. I believe she did this for personal gain. I honestly believe that my belongings are in her home. Then I found out that my things were "auctioned" for a mere $350.00. That's insulting! Everything was new and there were irreplaceable items as well as collectibles!! I've made a few complaints to U-haul. I too was told that someone would get back to me in 2 days. After a week of waiting, I made another complaint on-line. The woman e-mailed me back and apologized that my situation had not been addressed as promised. She left a contact name and number, but the woman called me and gave me a number to call. Upon calling that number I was given the number of the "local claims adjuster", all the way in Georgia. I was told that if I didn't hear from him in 2 days to call him. I called twice, leaving 2 separate messages on 2 separate voicemails. After a week, I was finally contacted. I was told that he would call me back on the upcoming Tuesday or Wednesday. On Thursday he sent out a letter to me, stating that it would probably be 2 more weeks for an answer,(as to whether they will replace my belongings or not). I'm furious with this whole mess and as I look upon this website I see that I'm not the only victim of U-hauls'. So, I'm in on wanting to start a class action suit against them, so where do we begin?? I also am looking into contacting Dateline, 20/20, and the attorney general of NC because I don't believe they should be able to continue to get away with this. This is NOT good business and I find Kandice Shedd to be totally unprofessional!! I had been using U-haul as a service since 1989, but due to this situation, I WILL NEVER USE U-HAUL AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! I also believe that Kandice Shedd should have some type of criminal charges brought against her! This was malicious and she willingly withheld information from me so she could auction my belongings. Does anyone know if it is possible for me to press charges against her? Please contact me via e-mail if you do. As, I mentioned, this is still pending, but I don't want this to happen to anyone else!! To everyone who has been a victim of U-hauls', it is my opinion that you should contact the better business bureau and file a complaint. We all as a group need to come forth with a class action suit!!!!!!!!
