Sony PlayStation®2 Consumer Complaints
Information and Discussion Board
- The Lawsuit. "Lawsuits were filed regarding the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system models 30001, 30001R, 35001, 39001, 39010, 50001, and 50010 (“PS2”). The plaintiffs in those cases claim that certain inappropriate 'Disc Read Error' messages are displayed. They also claim that some PS2s fail to play and that some of them cause damage to CDs or DVDs during playback." Link.
- Sony Settles Lawsuit. "Sony Computer Entertainment America, Sony of Canada, and Toys R Us of Canada have settled a class action lawsuit over the systems, pending the approval of US and Canadian courts. If those courts approve the settlement, gamers who have recently purchased, repaired, or lost the use of an affected PS2 are eligible to receive a check for $25 ($31 Canadian), a free PS2 game from a specified list, or a free or reduced cost repair or replacement (at SCEA's discretion) of an affected system." gamespot.com (Nov 9, 2005). The last day to submit a claim form to be part of this settlement was February 16, 2006.
- Complaints persist. Surfing the web, one finds continued complaints regarding newer models of Sony PS2s than invovled in the lawsuit. The following is typical of web complaints by consumers: "Lutfee of Pittsburgh PA (03/09/07)--'I bought a play station in 2006. It never played movies. Now I can't even play games on it, it gets really hot in 10 minutes after I put the game in. I have to keep opening the system and wiping off the disc, just to play a simple Madden football game. It is almost imposible to play action games.'" Link.
