Apple iPhone Complaints--Lawsuit
Batteries, Text Messaging and other complaints
- Post your own comment.
- Battery Lawsuit. Given the titanic level of hype surrounding the launch of the iPhone, one should not be surprised that the actual product did not live up to the hype for some people. However, it is surprising that within weeks of the launch we already have the first class action lawsuit filed against Apple. The suit involves the iPhone battery. The crux of the complaint is the alleged nondisclosure of the fact that "The iPhone is a sealed unit with its battery soldered on the inside of the device so it cannot be changed by the owner." If you have a problem with the iPhone battery (which many early users have reported), it necessary to ship the entire unit back to Apple. With other cel phones, the user merely obtains a new battery and pops the old out of the phone. And this from New York: "Officials in New York state asked Apple Inc. on Monday to change its iPhone design to allow consumers to replace their own batteries, just days after lawyers in Illinois filed a class-action lawsuit over the same complaint. Apple charges customers a US$79 fee to replace the iPhone battery, which is sealed inside the phone... ."
- AT&T International Roming Charges Lawsuit. "Apple Inc. is facing yet another class-action lawsuit over its iPhone, this time from a New York State resident who claims the company failed to adequately disclose to consumers that the handset is locked to AT&T's network and that using the device internationally would result in substantial data roaming charges. * * * Approximately two weeks after purchasing his iPhone, Kliegerman traveled to Mexico for a week where he continued to use his iPhone to check emails and surf the web. [He thought data use was free with the iPhone.] Upon returning from Mexico, Kliegerman claims to have received a bill from AT&T with $2,000 in international data roaming charges." Link.
- iPhone user complaints reported on the web. As with any brand new product, there are bugs and deficiencies in the iPhone reported by users including: (a) lack of a memory expansion slot to increase the stingy basic memory, (b) low call and speaker phone volume, (c) slow download speeds on AT&T network (which is currently the only network you can use the iPhone on), (d) short battery life between charges, (e) problems with text messaging. Note: the iPhone supports SMS messaging but not MMS messages.
- There are reports of a software update already being issued by Apple for its newest version of the iPhone that attempts to fix some of the problems.
- For positive reviews of the iPhone, here is one from David Pogue of the NY Times and another from USA TODAY's Ed Baig & Jefferson Graham.
