Cox Communications Complaints
Bandwidth limits, service cutoff, billing issues, and more

- Cox DMCA Takedown Notices. According to web reports, Cox has been shutting off internet access for selected customers telling them that Cox received a DMCA takedown notice from third parties. Allegedly, the customer downloaded a file with material violating someone's copyright. Well, that's hitting a fly with a sledgehammer. The DMCA requires ISPs to do much less than shut off a customer's internet access.
- Broadband Use Caps. What makes the Cox DMCA takedown action fishy is that Cox recently announced the institution of caps on monthly broadband use by customers but the caps are generous: "Cox Communications started phasing in hard usage limits in February, and now a majority of that company's subscribers are limited to downloading 2 gigabytes a day--the equivalent of about two compressed feature-length movies or about 400 MP3 songs." Link. Putting two and two together, do you think it is possible that Cox is using the DMCA takedown notice as ruse to cut off internet access for his use customers??? Only supposition but one has to wonder.
- There are other complaints against Cox on the web regarding billing disputes. See here and here. That's not unusual for a company the size of Cox but something to keep an eye on. They appear to have successfully resolved all complaints filed against them with the BBB, or at least for the most recent reporting period from September 2008.
