  • Post your own comment.
  • Rise in complaints. Complaints by individuals against collection agencies have been on the rise. Here are a few recent news stories on the trend: 1) Consumer complaints against collection agencies were the #4 top category with the Maryland Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division for 2007 per Baltimore Sun Times, 2) Consumer complaints against collection agencies were the #2 top category with the Washington Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division for 2007 per this new story, and 3) Consumer complaints against collection agencies were the #4 top category with the Oregon Department of Justice for 2007 per this new story.
  • Quite a few class action suits have been filed against collection agencies for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) which prohibits debt collectors from engaging in abusive, deceptive and unfair collection practices. See Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, and Example 4 (last example is suit against collection agency for violation of FDCPA but not class action).
