Charter Communications Complaints
Hidden Modem Rental Fee
- My complaint. In August 2006, I responded to a Charter advertisement to receive digital cable, broadband internet, and unlimited local and long distance calling as a package for $99.97 per month. No mention was made of a rental fee for the modem when I ordered the service via telephone from Charter. The first install of the broadband internet didn't work right, intermittent connection. Thinking the modem provided by Charter might be subpar, I purchased one myself. The second technician who came out from Charter got the internet working properly and took back the Charter modem telling me it would be removed from my bill. After reading complaints about Charter online in December 2006, I found that some customers complained of being charged for a modem they in fact owned. A review of my Charter bill revealed a line item reading: "3m Down/256k Up, Includes: Modem Lease". A person at the Charter call center told me that "yes" I was being charged $2.96 per month for a modem I already owned. She promised to credit my account for the next bill. It has not arrived yet. We shall see.
