Charter Communications Complaints--Billing Practices
The $99.97 package special for digital cable, high speed internet, and phone
- My complaint. In August 2006, I saw the following advertisement online: "$99.97 when you buy broadband internet, phone & TV w/ Charter www.charter.net". Checked further online to confirm the offer was $99.97 per month for broadband internet access, telephone including unlimited nationwide calling, and digital cable television. As it appeared to be a very attractive deal, I promptly called Charter and accepted their offer. The phone was installed along with the digital cable; however, it took two visits from a technician to get the cable internet hookup to work. Finally solved, I was happy with the service until the first bill arrived: $217.78! I thought the sales person on the phone told me installation was free; however, the bill contained a $49.99 charge for installation. As I cannot find documentation of the offer of free installation, I'll eat that charge. Then there was a prorated partial month service of $14.92 (for my prior cable plan). Nonetheless, this leaves $52.90 unaccounted for as an overbill. Further study of the Charter billing detail indicates that I was charged $48.98 for long-distance which were supposed to be included in the $99.97 flat fee. I have called Charter's billing department and emailed their customer service department without having the billing problem resolved.
- Others out there. I fail to believe this is an isolated problem. Charter is a big company with, I assume, standardized billing software. If I was incorrectly billed for telephone long distance, I think it is reasonable to assume that others were similarly overbilled.
- Apparently a class action has been filed against Charter. To the persons promoting this class action, don't spam this page.
