One Price Quoted On The Phone, Another Comes On The Bill

  • My complaint. My wife and I each have a cel phone plus my business has a phone line in the house. A fourth line as a house phone seemed superfluous (how many phone lines can two people use?) especially when I was getting jacked $40 per month for the pleasure of a phone line only used by outside parties to solicit gifts from us. So in June 2007 I called AT&T to cancel this line. The young man who answered the phone gave me a deal I could not refuse: $7.99 per month plus a $50 credit. The $7.99 deal was for incoming calls only (outgoing would cost extra). I never use this phone so basically it would be $8 per month to avoid the hassle of notifying the bank, credit card companies, insurance company, etc. that I have a new number plus having a line I never answer for all the donation solicitors to call. Seemed reasonable to me. The first bill arrived today. Surprise! The charge for the line is $22.87, not $7.99. Amazingly, they did give me the $50 credit. Certainly, I am not the only one offered a deal on the phone with AT&T only for the bill to arrive with a higher price.

  • AT&T in the news for improper billing practices.
    AT&T Corp. will pay $50,000 to the state of Missouri for improperly billing more than 29,000 consumers. Those Missourians who paid the improper charge will receive or already have received refunds or credits under an agreement obtained by Attorney General Jay Nixon.

    Beginning in January 2004, AT&T instituted a "monthly recurring charge" or a base charge of $3.95 per month for low-usage customers. AT&T mistakenly sent bills to former customers and some high-usage customers who would have been exempt from the charge.
