Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Rhinoplasty
Question 5
Question:
I had rhynoplasty four days ago. They did septoplasty, reducation of dorsum, typoplasty and frenulum reduction. I had nasal packing for 24 hours that was already removed. My external splint should go off in four days. From yestarday ( on the third postoperative day ) I have a very runny nose during the day and the night. I don't have any other symptoms: no headache, no sore throat, there's no sighns of meningismus. Is this rhinorrhea a complication after surgery or it is expected? I am taking oral and intranasal decongensants but it doesn't help. As a result of rhynorrhea and nasal blocage I can't eat and even drink with difficulty. What I should do to improve my nasal breathing and to get rid of rhynorrhea? If is is expected, how long it should last? Thank you very much.

Response: Rhinorrhea is common, particularly following septoplasty. I would suggest that you visit with your surgeon in order to make certain that everything is closed, all of the packing material was removed and healing is progressing as it should. Needless to say, if there is bleeding associated with this discharge, you should visit him/her more urgently. He or she may perform a test to make certain of the nature of the fluid that is draining.
