Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Rhinoplasty
Question 4
Question:
Hello, I had an open septoplasty/rhinoplasty procedure to correct a severely deviated septum and a dorsal hump on my nose. It has been over four months post-op and I still have as much internal swelling as on the first day after the surgery. I can not breathe at all out of one side of my nose. This makes sleeping very difficult. My surgeon told me to be patient and wait and that it could take up to a year for swelling to subside. My external swelling is very slowly gowing down, but the internal swelling isn't budging. I am doubtful that this can be normal. I have looked online for information and can not find anything talking about internal swelling as long as four months or longer after such a procedure. Can you give me some words of hope? Should I continue to be "patient". Are there remedies to help me out? My doctor recommended Afrin, but I have consistent rebound congestion the next day after using it at night. Please help.
Thank-you

Response: Some people do have prolonged swelling of the mucosa (inside of the nose) after this procedure. The only to continue to check with your surgeon about is to make certain that there is no deviation, infection, hematoma, etc. to account for it. If he/she has examined it and found there to be none of those problems or turbinate problems, patience is the best remedy.
