Question:
I am having liposuction and fat grafting Dec. 10th 2007. I am on the Dep provera shot which will not wear off until January sometime. I will be flying home on a 5 hour flight exactly 6 days after my surgery. My Major, Major concern is pulminary embolism/blood clots forming and that my risks are greater since I am on birth control, having the surgery and will be immobilized on an airplane for a few hours just a few days after my surgey. My Question is: What are some suggestions or precautions I should take after surgery to bring that risk down.

Response: You are wise to think of that problem. The best suggestion that I can make is that you drink plenty of water, talk to your sugeon about a possible mild blood thinner and make certain that you get up every hour or so on your flight and walk around and exercise your hips and calves. Most blood clots occur in the large veins of the hips and getting the blood moving during long flights is your best means of prevention. If you smoke, your risks increase markedly as well.
