Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Liposuction
Question 4
Question: How common is it for abdominal liposuction to end up lumpy and bulgy, like actress Tara Reid's botched liposuction procedure? What causes this?
Response: Often, fat does not come out evenly during liposuction and, if the surgeon does not recognize that it is happening at the time of the procedure, an uneven result can occur. At other times, the skin does not retract back evenly or there may be complications of infection or bleeding under the skin that can occur and require additional treatment. Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction helps to make the fat removal and skin contraction more even and also reduces the occurrence of seromas and hematomas all of which helps with a more even result. I cannot comment on Ms. Reid's abdomen since I haven't seen it.
