Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Face Lift
Question 5

Question: I am a 20 years old man. I have a thin long face. Can plastic surgery help me get a shorter wider face?

Response: Hi, and thanks for your question. Plastic surgery can in fact change the appearance of a face, depending on your goals and expectations. The ability of surgery to contour the face is limited by location of crucial nerves and vessels and the existing proportions of the face and facial bones. Augmentation to make the face wider is fairly straight-forward and can be performed through implants, fillers or fat grafting to the cheekbones, cheeks and angle of the jawbones. Reducing the vertical dimensions of the face is more challenging, although conservative sculpting of the front of the jawbone can improve the vertical vector. Most of these procedures will give 1 to 2 weeks of "down-time" to recover. The cost will vary depending on the procedures selected. Photo morphing is performed by most facial plastic specialists and can help demonstrate expected changes. You can locate a specialist in your area on www.abfprs.org.
