Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Face Lift
Question 3
Question: I wanted to know what kind of procedure was needed. When I am smiling people tell me I look mad, My smiles are downward.
Response: There are several different smile "types," depending upon which muscles around the mouth are the dominant ones. This can affect whether the upper teeth show with a smile, how much of a "full mouth smile" is seen, and whether the corners of the mouth turn down a bit with the smile. These muscles are usually not treated surgically, but Botox and fillers placed very carefully can alter the appearance of the smile and make it much more esthetically pleasing. The other thing to consider is what your eyes are doing when you smile. Many people furrow their brows or squint with a smile, making them appear angry. This is also usually treated with Botox. Talking to a qualified facial plastic surgeon in your area (look at www.abfprs.org) may help pinpoint the source of the angry appearance. Good luck!
