Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Face Lift
Question 1

Question: How does one avoid having a facelift that is too tight, you know, the Joan Rivers look?

Response: The basic principle of the traditional facelift is tension. Tension in the midface is the enemy of the 'modern' facelift. Tension flattens the midface tissue which is unnatural. Youthful faces are curvilinear. The midface procedure that I perform restores the fullness of the upper midface, the hollowness of the lower midface and improves the appearance of the lower lid. The procedure is sculptural and tension-free, re-creating the soft and graceful curves of youth. The 'modern' facelift provides aesthetic advantages over a traditional facelift because it actually fills in the hollow areas by moving the soft tissue in a vertical direction, something not done by the traditional facelift. The combination of the traditional facelift (for the neck only) and the midface lift comprise the 'modern' facelift and constitute a powerful tool in facial rejuvenation.
