Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 62

Question: I had breast implants placed under the muscle 7 yrs ago. Recently I had an MRI done due to a lump that was found. Everything turned out ok but my report says that one implant is under the muscle and the other is above the muscle. Is this change something that could happen over time or was the surgery not performed correctly?

Response: It depends upon the exact procedure that was done as well as the size of the implant and your anatomy. If your breasts are symmetrical, I would not worry about it too much. The muscle, pectoralis major, only covers the inner aspect of the implant to, about, the level of your nipple. People have a misconception that the entire implant is covered or that the implant is somehow better supported when they are placed under the muscle - neither of which is correct in most instances.
