Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction Question 59
Question: I have fibromyalgia, Am I still a candidate for breast implants? I really want to have breast implants but I've read that fibromyalgia can worsen after a procedure. Will I be turned down because of my condition?

Response: If your fibromyalgia is very severe and uncontrolled and, since we do not have any known causes or treatment for the condition, it is generally unwise for anyone with this condition to have any unnecessary surgical procedures performed. I have had a number of patients who have developed fibromyalgia years following having implants placed and things needed to be done for their implants (due to capsule formation, leakage, etc.) who had no worsening of their condition after the surgeries.

Subject: Fibromyalgia and breast implants Comment: Most of the discussion on the web about fibromyalgia and breast implants relates to the issue of whether there is a causal relationship between developing fibromyalgia after receiving breast implants. See Link 1 and Link 2.
