Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 46

Question: I am 23 weeks pregnant and I have saline implants - Placed under the muscle 11 years ago. As my breasts are increasing in size due to the pregnancy, I am experiencing a hardening bilaterally on the inside of each breast. The skin there is puffy and the pores very pronounced - Almost as if there is fluid just under the skin in the area the size of a silver dollar (the nipples are not involved). I've also noticed greater numbness than before the pregnancy and some sharp pains. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

Response: It does not sound as though there is anything to worry about. The swelling sounds normal for pregnancy. The enlarged pores and puffiness is also due, usually to increased blood flow. I would suggest that you be examined by a qualified breast or plastic surgeon just to make certain that nothing else is going on (there are increased risks of breast cancers - all cancers actually - with pregnancy). Just to be on the safe side.
