Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 41

Question: This may sound like a strange question, but can fully submuscular implants cause chest wall and/or rib damage? With this placement are the implants literally "sitting on the ribs"? I am considering augmentation but wondering if this can cause damage to surrounding organs, regarding scar tissue, damage during durgery, etc. Thanks for your advice.

Response: There is little risk of injury to any internal organs although there have been cases of pneumothorax (collapses lung due to air entry between the lung and the rib cage). Also, in my experience, after many years with large implants and pressure, I have seen rib deformity where the normal contour of the ribs themselves are flattened in the area under the implants. These have not led to any functional problems with the heart or lungs to my knowledge. If you are very concerned with these risks, despite their very low incidence, I would suggest you either not have the procedure performed or have implants placed in a subglandular position (above the muscle).
