Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 40

Question: I had breast reduction surgery last may. My left breast is smaller and the nipple points down and to the left. My surgeon said that she must remove the sutures from my nipples as they are pulling the left nipple. Is it normal to leave them in this long and are they ever perminently left in? If I had not seen her about this I don't know if she would have ever taken them out. I am now concerned about hew expertise. Thank you.

Response: There are a number of surgeons who use permanent stitches in the deep layers of tissue in order to give support to the breast for extended times following this procedure. This is common in Europe. Most of us in the U.S. use dissolving deep sutures where the tissue itself is repositioned and provides the long-term support. I doubt that it is the "stitches pulling the tissue" but, rather, that the nipple was malpositioned and requires a revision. Sometime, it is not the expertise of the surgeon, but, rather, the way that you heal which is unpredictable. Revisions, although uncommon, are not rare following this procedure.
