Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 31

Question: My wife wants to have breast reduction surgery, but I think that the common practice is barbaric compared to the augmentation procedure. And I have seen after surgery photos and the breast just don't look natural or are odd shaped. Are there alternative methods of reducing breasts without cutting out large sections, removal and repositioning of the areola, anchor shaped scars and if not why have they perfected making them larger and not perfected making them smaller? Is it possible to cut around the areola and liposuction the breast tissue away and pull the skin upward and sew it to the edge of the areola while removing the excess skin? Wouldn't this hide scaring, minimize the damage to the areola's sensation and milk ducts while providing a more normal breast shape and size?

Response: That is one method of performing breast reduction surgery. However, it does not allow for much reduction or breast lift and is not suited for every patient. Scars are certainly a concern and breast reduction is a trade-off between treatment of symptoms for which the procedure is commonly performed and the scarring which can be extensive. Liposuction alone is another alternative that can reduce volume and help treat symptoms of back and shoulder pain, but does not give much improvement in shape or nipple position.
