Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 29
Question:
Will a plastic surgeon perform breast implants on someone with diabetes that isn't stictly controlled and who smokes?
From: Cathy, North Carolina 09/07/2007
Response: Often, the answer to this question is yes. Smoking interferes integrally with healing but, in the case of breast augmentation, the blood supply is so good and interrupted so little that it can be performed safely. Similarly, diabetes increases risks of healing and infection but both are so infrequently seen with this procedure that it is common, after good control of blood surgars for a time, for the procedure to be performed. This is in very stark contrast to a breast lift which is contraindicated for poorly controlled diabetics and should never be performed on someone who smokes.
