Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 24
Question: I have had my breast implants for about 6-7 years now. My problem is one breast is bigger than the other. The breast that is smaller is not as full.
It's been like this for awhile now. Also, the breast that is bigger sits higher than the one that's smaller. How can I tell if the one breast is leaking? I have saline implants. What are the symptoms of saline leaking breasts? Recently, over the past few weeks, I started to feel the bag in the breast that's smaller. It's like a poking sensation.
Response: Typically, if a saline-filled implant leaks, it will go all the way flat because the saline is reabsorbed by the body once outside the implant. I have personally had one patient who had a partial leak from the valve of a saline implant but it is uncommon. There are often no initial symptoms of a saline-filled implant that leaks or deflates. Note, the term "implant rupture" is used but implants do not explode so I think this term should be abandoned. Many women whose saline implants deflate will say that they noticed a "funny feeling" but deny any trauma to their breasts. If there is a noticible change in volume of the breast and there is an increased palpability of the implant shell, this is indicative of implant deflation. The best way to tell is to visit with a board-certified plastic surgeon for an examination.
