Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 21

Question: I would like to have breast implants but I do a lot of weight lifting. 45 lb flys etc. (often heavier than men) I've lost 150 lbs and do not intend to stop lifting or trying to lift more. Will implants hinder my exercise?

Response: There are many problems with breast implants in weight lifters not only due the to continued outward pressure from the pectoralis muscles but also because many lifters have low body fat and would benefit from placement under the muscle. My suggestion is for small implants placed above the muscle and to use the newly approved silicone (not as good as cohesive implants but these are not yet approved by the FDA).
