Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 20

Question: I had a breast augmentation procedure about twenty months ago. I am beginning to feel constant discomfort in my right breast. The implant seems to be straining the muscle underneath. In addition I can feel the implant on the right underside of the breast where on the left side I cannot - almost as if there is an air pocket in it. I would say that is not filled enough or it is overfilled because that breast seems to be larger then the other (swelling?). I am not sure what the problem is or if I have any recourse with the surgeon who performed the procedure. Or is it possible that the implant itself is defective? I would return to the doctor but I fear he/she might be predisposed not to admit any fault. Should I consult with another specialist first or is there anybody on this forum that could provide further insight into what could be happening to my implant and what my best options are?

Response: It is not at all uncommon to feel ripples in the implant, especially on the outer, lower side. There is no muscle in that area so, even if the implants are placed under the muscle, there is none to cover it there. Sometimes ripples do not form - as on the other side but, usually, in time, they will. I would suggest that you visit with your plastic surgeon and discuss this with him or her since, your surgeon is not at fault of anything other than the necessity to use saline-filled implants which are all that are available in this country for first time cosmetic augmentation. If this really disturbs you, alternatives can be discussed with you by the surgeon.
