Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction
Question 19

Question: I am in need of a breast reduction; however I am concerned as to whether scar tissue is ever a problem for those that have had this type of surgery. I am very aware that my mother and I produce excessive scar tissue and am wondering if there is some type of medication that can be used to lessen the growth of scar tissue. Scar tissue is the main reason I refrain from having the surgery.

Response: Scarring is a real risk of any surgery including breast reduction surgery. People with a history of excessive scarring must weigh the benfit of the reduction against the likelihood of bad scarring. There are many options for the treatment of scars, however, the results are variable. If you can not accept the scarring, this surgery may not be a good option for you.
