Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Breast Augmentation-Lift-Reduction Question 18
Question: I have meet with several physicians for breast lift and one of them indicated that he places the implant above the muscle but BELOW the facia so it would not get any of the breast tissue in it. How safe is this process and how long has it been around? Does it give a look similar to below the muscle?
Response: This is referred to as a "sub-fascial" placement of the breast implant. The fascia is a very thin covering of tissue that lies over the muscle and does not give a very substantial coverage other than the breast tissue that is
already present. Placing the upper aspect of the implant under the muscle, called the sub-pectoral placement, provides more coverage to the implant and in the situation where you are going to have a breast lift as well, it provides enhanced blood supply to the skin of the breast. Each board-certified plastic surgeon you see will have their own opinions but it is important for you to ask questions like this so that you understand why certain decisions about your care are made.
