Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) Question 7
Question: I have a terrible problem with swelling if I cry. If I cry the night before - even for a short amount of time, I will wake up and my eyes swollen shut - literally to the point where I would have to call in sick to work. My question is, do you believe a blepharoplasty surgery would help with the swelling. I`ve read several articles on swelling eyes and it appears that they just comment on ice and cold tea bags. Would and upper and lower blepharoplasty help the swelling, or is this surgery mainly to remove excess sagging skin. I would hate to go through an unnecessary surgery if it won`t eliminate the swelling. Thank you in advance for your help. I appreciate your time.

Response: Blepharoplasty is not just for sagging skin but also for bags and excess fat spilling over the rim of bone around the orbit (eye socket). There is a chance that the scarring involved in this procedure would help the tissue not hold as much fluid and reduce the swelling but I would not count on it. It sounds as though you have a true swelling of the tissues around your eyes and I would suggest, rather than surgery, that you visit with an allergist who can usually help with this problem (many of the conditions are a response similar to allergies and so they should be able to help).
