Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
Question 6
Question: I am a 34 year woman. I read a previous question about dark circles under the eye with puffiness due to excess fat. My problem is that I have dark circles but no puffiness and the dark circles are slightly sunken into the eyesocket(deep hollow as I have heard it called). This has gradually become worse over the past few years. I can really tell a differnece in pictures. What can be done for more of a smooth transition between my eyes and cheeks? Surgically and non-surgically (injections vs. creams)?

Response: Hi Angela
One of my favorite uses for fillers is to place them in the tear trough, eliminating the hollow under the eyes. Often, the hollow makes dark circles appear by shadow effect, or at least the shadow makes them worse. Fillers will not change the color of the skin but will eliminate the hollow. My personal favorite (for softness and longevity) is Juvederm. Surgical options are not as reliable or as easy to contour but involve a lower lid blepharoplasty with fat repositioning or grafting to the tear trough. If you do not have bulges, I would recommend starting with Juvederm to the tear trough- this may be all you want or need!
