Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
Question 5

Question: I am four weeks post of blepheroplasty with corrugator muscle incision. I have prolonged swelling and hardness over the left inner canthus, upward toward the bridge of my nose. The left eye appears smaller, M.D. states this is due to swelling and this could take "months" to resolve. Should I seek a second opinion?

Response: After 4 weeks, I would expect most of the swelling from an uncomplicated procedure to be gone. You may have had an unrecognized hematoma in the area since there is a small vein which is not visualized well through this approach and the reason that many of us prefer to use the coronal approach with muscle resection rather than incision (which usually heals back to full function anyway). I am concerned over the change in your eye shape as the medial canthus is near the area operated on and is very difficult to repair should it have been compromised. I would suggest that you visit with a craniofacial surgeon in order to test this possibility.
