Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) Question 3
Question: I am 34 years old and I have puffy, dark circles under my eyes. Can this be corrected without surgery? If surgery is the only option what type would it be? Would I need to repeat the surgery later in life? Thank You.
Response: It all depends. Dark circles could be from various sources including allergies, lack of sleep and your parents. Puffiness can be from water, from allergies, or fat herniation. Dark circles that you have had all your life can sometimes be treated with creams that you apply to the area that contain bleaching agents (like hydroquinones). I recommend you consider only prescription strength agents like the Obagi line of products. Be aware that it’s rare that the dark circles just disappear; they often lighten in color with time. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the fat on the lower lids and this can reduce the puffiness that you see. You need to visit with reputable professionals and see what they would recommend.
