Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 8

Question: I had a mini abdominoplasty 4 1/2 years ago. Since that time I have had 4 touch up surgeries. It has been 2 years since my last touch up and I still have a lot of loose skin above my navel creating what the surgeon called it (a hood over my navel). He now wants to go back in through the original incision, lift the skin up to my navel, and cut my navel loose so it drops, then secure my navel back in the new position . He said then the skin will fall into place and not be stuck creating a hood above my navel. Is it safe to detach a belly button? Have you ever detached a belly button before? Thanks for listening.

Response: Sounds like you needed a full tuck to begin with. Only a full tuck will improve the skin above the umbilicus. You can "detach" the belly button without a problem. However, if you belly button is in the normal position or lower it can look strange if you lower it more. My criteria for "floating" the belly button is very dependent on the level of the belly button and the quality of the skin on your abdomen.
