Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 7
Question: I have had numerous belly surgeries for intestinal problems. In the course of all these surgeries I have lost my bellybutton and have gained a "chesire cat" like smile that is at the bottom of my belly caused from midline incisions. My questions are 1)Can tummy tucks cause more adhesions? 2) Can adhesions interfere with a tummy tuck or simalar procedure. 3) Have you heard of insurance companies covering this type of surgery due to disfigurement?
Response: In answer to each of your questions,
- Tummy tucks should not cause more intestinal adhesions, but if you are at risk for problems with adhesions a tummy tuck will not reduce that risk.
- Adhesions reflect scar production and if you have scar in your abdominal cavity, you probably have scar on your abdominal wall which will make a tummy tuck a bit more difficult for the surgeon. Also, if you have a hernia from one of your abdominal incisions, your risk of complications might be increased compared with someone who does not.
- Sorry but I can give you no answers regarding insurance companies. Your policy is a contract between you and the company and will outline your benefits. You should direct all questions to them.
