Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 4
Question: What is the purpose of the compression garment after a tummy tuck and lipo, and how long do I need to wear it?
Editor's note: As information on this topic is readily available elsewhere on the internet, I shall reproduce quotes from other web sites below in response to this question:
"Compression garments serve several medical purposes including reducing swelling, reducing the risk of blood clots (hematomas) and reducing the risk that the treated area will not 'mold' into its proper position. Compression garments serve an aesthetic purpose, too, because swelling is visibly reduced when a compression garment is in place. Another added benefit—clothes will fit better, look better, and feel better." yourplasticsurgeryguide.com.
Abdominoplasty: "You will be fitted for a compression garment prior to surgery. Compression is recommended for 24 hours a day for the first two weeks following surgery, then only at night for additional two weeks." Joseph Banis, MD Link.
