Question 33

Question: hi i did a tummy tuck about 2 months ago and after taking out the drain i accumulated fluid above my belly button so the doctor performed aspiration to remove the liquid now the area is swollen and feels more tender than the rest of my stomach is this normal or should i wear a garment to help the swelling heal. Could it possibly be an infection?

Response: I would need to know the last time that an aspiration was done to answer this question with more assurance but, certainly, infection is a major concern and you should be seen by your surgeon as soon as possible. It is possible for tenderness to occur due to injury of your muscle from the aspirating needle as well as from the surgery itself. There are a number of other possibilities including hematoma or recurrence of the seroma. I have even seen a true, walled seroma which required surgical removal in order to finally heal. You had best be seen by your surgeon to differentiate all of these possibilities.
