Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 28
Question: Dear Doc, I got my tummytuck done in march 08. The operation was a success but my doc left a little fat in my stomach saying that after five months he will my do the liposuction of my stomach again and will make it flat. He also did not lift my virginal skin whih he promised he will do later along with liposuction. Just after 5 months, he did liposuction on my stomach as well as lift my virginal skin. I came home after my procedure and after few weeks noticed that the skin of my stomach while I was lying sideways in bed or in a crawling position or sitting was hanging and sagging like a 80 yrs old woman. I was devastated and depressed. I went to my Doc. After examining me, he admitted his mistake saying that he did lot of lipo on my stomach and as a result it made my skin sag. He also told me that after 6 months he will perform another tummytuck and will make things better. Now my question is ...Is tummytuck revision possible? Will there be bad scars from a second tummytuck? wILL THE SCARS BE near the belly button?

Response: The order in which your procedure was approached was incorrect. The liposuction, if necessary, should always be done first, followed by the tummy tuck. A tummy tuck, on its own, does nothing for the fat layer but tightens the skin. When your liposuction was performed, it created more, loose, extra skin. The scarring from your redo tummy tuck should be very similar to that from the first. If the muscle was tightened with the first procedure, that need not be redone. The scar should be in the same position as your present scar and of the same or similar quality.
