Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 27

Question: I had a full tummy tuck the 14th of October, 2008 and it is now the 6th of January, 2009, about 12 weeks. I still have a lot of swelling in my abdomin and hips. what can I do to make the swelling go away? I wear the compression garment day & night but the swelling does not go away. Please advise me on what I can do. Thank you.

Response: You are doing everything right if, indeed, the problem is swelling. I would suggest that you visit with your surgeon in order to make certain that you do not have a hematoma or a seroma - both of which can prolong the appearance of swelling. Bring your garment in with you as well to your visit to make sure that it is not too loose (or too tight) - both of which can cause problems with swelling. Some people take longer for their lymphatics (which remove swelling and are interrupted with all full tummy tucks) to regenerate after the procedure.
