Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 25
Question: Hi there. In 2004 my sigmoid colon tore, and I had surgery and had to have a colostomy bag for 6 weeks while the other end healed. Then it was all reversed and everything is back to normal. My question is would I still be elgible to get a tummy tuck or lipo on my stomach or has all those parts inside me been put in the way now? Like would a surgeon operate around that or would I run the risk of him/her just slicing on through my bowels on accident because they were moved around in there years ago. I am not even sure if tummy tucks get cut down that deep but I wanted to find out regardless. Thanks for your help.

Response: Matt,
We often perform scar revisions on people's abdomens who have had such procedures. All of your bowel procedures were performed under the rectus muscle layer of your stomach and, although there is more scarring and, often, a less than perfect result, a tummy tuck can be performed if all the other blood supply to this area is intact. Liposuction is a "blind" procedure and would have to be done very cautiously if at all due to the possibility of a hernia and bowel injury near where your colostomy was. Visit with a plastic surgeon for more information on your options.
