Question 22

Question: I just had a tummy tuck three weeks ago. When should I expect the swelling to stop. I now have a new belly button, and it has a black scab. do you think the scab would eventually fall off.

Thanks.

Response: Swelling can remain for several months following a full tummy tuck due to the sectioning of the lymphatic vessels with the low incision that is used. You can have swelling, especially in the perineal area and the area above the incision which, usually, decreases by about 90% after two to three months and then, several months for the last few percent. If your new belly button is, indeed black after 3 weeks, I would suggest that you visit with your plastic surgeon. There may be too much tension on the area and the blood supply may be compromised. On the other hand, it may simply be a scab that can be removed to reveal healthy tissue. He/she will have to determine this.
