Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 21
Question: I have quite a large "spare tire" in my lower abdomen - fat. Will a plastic surgeon remove it or do they just remove loose skin?
From: emm, Oregon 07/25/2008
Response: The answer is, that depends. If this area is a true pannus (hanging skin with underlying fat) it can be removed surgically with a tummy tuck. If, on the other hand, there is not sufficient skin overlying the fat for it to truly "hang", your surgeon will have to decide if it is removable at the time of a tummy tuck or, as in many cases, you should undergo liposuction of the area first, await 3 to 6 months, and then have the tummy tuck.
