Ask a Plastic Surgeon / Abdominoplasty
Question 20

Question: Abdominoplasty S/P 12 days. I had my drains removed after 7 days with 24 hr output of serous fluid <15ml. My surgeon advised to limit physical activity to decrease the risk of fluid accumulation. Advice followed, activity limited to light housework. I noticed this morning by palpation that I have developed slight fluid accumulation under the incision site. My abdomen is not swollen or tight and I have no discomfort. Do all seromas need aspiration or will the body eventually absorb the fluid? What determines the need to aspirate?

Response: KTRN,
See your surgeon on Monday to determine whether you and your surgeon can observe the small seroma. The need for drainage is a decision your surgeon can make by examination and experience.
