Question 11

Question: Three weeks ago I had a full tummy tuck, and breast lift. It looks great . However I have severe skin sensivity (burning feeling) throughout my entire tummy, not breasts, and even down on my pubic bone. It is really painful. My doctor said he has never heard of this , so now I am starting to get concerned. Will this awful pain go away? I can't even wear a shirt with out it rubbing against my skin, causing me pain. Any information would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

Response: Jeny,
When the long incision is made for a full tummy tuck, the nerves that supply the lower abdominal skin are severed. Usually, there is a rather large area of numbness that slowly gets smaller and smaller and, again, usually, almost disappears as several weeks go by. Sometimes, different types of nerves are innervated first. The sensations of pain, vibration, heat, cold and touch can "become confused" during this time. Given that you are healing well and there is no other cause for the burning such as infection or blood in the area, you are likely experiencing these mixed signals. Sometime, if this is prolonged, I have sent my patients to physiotherapists who specialize in desensitization and, essentially teaching your skin to sense normally again. This, in my experience, has never been a permanent problem and should resolve either on its own or with the help of therapy.
