Ask a Lawyer -- Immigration Question 36
Question: I just began to help my dad to file for his residency. Since I am turning 21 years old next year, his lawyer said that I could help him because he filed for residency years ago through his job. Since he is married, not to my mom, I am also helping his wife. However, my mom says that if I help them both, I won't be able to help her when she tries to file for residency because they will see that I already helped two people and won't want me to help more. Is this true?

Response: It is possibly you will not be able to apply for your stepmother if she became your stepmother after you turned 18. Also, you will have financial requirements to show that you can support everyone you file for and if you don't make much money it may leave your mother out of the equation. Before you file anything I would speak with an attorney to go over these and any other issues your case might face.
